Pentax K-x vs Sony Alpha 550 reviewed

Tom's Guide has a new review form Digital Versus, comparing the Pentax K-x and Sony Alpha 550, also noting differences between the Pentax K-m and K-x.
A year after Pentax released its highly rated K-m, there is a new entry-level DSLR with the K-x. The two cameras are very similar, with the exception of one major change. The old 10 Megapixel CCD sensor is out, and a new 12 Megapixel CMOS sensor is in. So what we expect is a comfortable, pleasant-to-use little SLR with improved sensitivity.
Among DSLRs, the K-x is up there with the best of the moment. Start-up is instantaneous, focusing is fast (but noisy with the kit 18-55 mm DA L lens), and so is image saving... provided you don’t enable the optical correction functions, which cause a delay of approximately three seconds when saving files! But since the same corrections exist in photo-retouching software, it may be better to leave them up to the computer. Burst mode is fairly fast, at 4.5 frames per second for nine JPEG images – an excellent result for an entry-level camera.

With their new A500/A550 DSLRs, Sony has new models to compete with the benchmark SLRs of the moment, namely the Nikon D90 and Canon T1i. The A550 has a wealth of features aimed at winning over photographers: a 14.2 MP EXMOR CMOS sensor, a burst speed of five frames per second, Live View with fast autofocus, and tilting display screen, among other things.

Pentax K-x entry-level DSLR

The K-x comes in red, blue, white, or black colors, and the red looks fantastic. The cam has 12.4-megapixel resolution with sensor-shift shake reduction for both still shots and video. Yeah, the camera can shoot 720p HD video at 24 frames per second using any Pentax lens.

The camera feature HDR image capturing mode and a selection of creative filters. Bursts can be shot until your memory card is full at 4.7 frames per second. The cam also has a full array of automatic modes and uses an 11 point autofocus system. Power comes from plain old AA batteries. The camera body with an 18-55mm kit lens sells for $649.95. Add in a 50-200mm lens as well as the basic kit and the system costs $749.95. Replace that 50-200mm lens with a 50-300mm lens and the kit will set you back $849.95.

Pentax K-m reviewed by Digital Life

The Digital Life section of Australian site Brisbane Times has a rather short review of the Pentax K-m DSLR. Check out the full Pentax K-m article on their page.

Like: The camera continues the Pentax style of no-nonsense SLRs. There are no gimmicky concessions to customers moving up from compact cameras. Every function is a genuine photographic tool. The Pentax kit lens is particularly fine. Image quality is exceptionally good, with one caveat.

Dislike: The camera has one serious flaw. JPEG images straight from the camera are unimpressive both in sharpness and in colour. We are at a loss to understand this because the RAW images are excellent. JPEG and RAW can be recorded simultaneously, so in one sense it is not an issue but it does mean that to get the best from the K-m you must be prepared to work with RAW files. If you use a Mac and iPhoto this will not be a nuisance but PC users will have to come to terms with RAW.

Pentax K-7 High-End DSLR

The 14.6-megapixel Pentax K-7 boasts a 23.4-by-15.6mm CMOS sensor, which the company says offers new video capabilities and four-channel output, as well as better low-light performance. The K-7 has an ISO range of 100 to 6400.

The K-7 also offers an 11-point autofocus system, a revamped metering system that features 77 light-metering points, a built-in flash, and the new Prime II image processor. Shutter speeds range from 1/8000 second to 30 seconds.

The high-end DSLR also features the same user interface as the lower-end K2000 DSLR, as well as body-based image stabilization. That sensor-shifting system means that the K-7's shake reduction feature will work with any Pentax K-mount lens, not just more-expensive stabilized lenses. A supersonic dust-removing vibration system is also part of the K-7's feature set.

The K-7's 3-inch-diagonal LCD features live view, the ability to use the larger display as a viewfinder in addition to the camera's traditional optical viewfinder. Pentax is also touting the K-7's viewfinder as having a field of view of 100 percent and heralds the K-7 as a highly weather-resistant camera, thanks to an entirely weather-sealed and weather-proofed body.

Pentax K20D Firmware Update v1.03 Released

Pentax has released a firmware update for its K20D digital SLR camera. The new version, 1.03, improves operation of the Shake Reduction (SR) function of the camera.

Pentax's in-body image stabilization technology, SR includes a built-in sensor in the camera body that identifies hand movement and compensates by moving a free-floating image sensor. This technology allows photographers to take photos at considerably slower shutter speeds, and improves the quality of photos taken in dusk or low-light situations.

Download and install the firmware from the Pentax support website.

Pentax 645 Digital 30 megapixel DSLR coming in 2010

Green Pentax K-m dSLR appears in Japan

Crave says:

The specifications remain similar at 10.2-megapixel resolution, a 5-point autofocus system, 3.5 frames-per-second burst mode, and a 2.7-inch LCD on the rear. All that's missing to make this dSLR a rugged commando are shockproof and waterproof features.

Rambo wannabes will also be glad to know that this iteration of the K-m will ship with an 18-55mm olive green lens, too.

Pentax smc FA 50mm 1:1.4 reviewed

From the review:

The Pentax smc FA 50mm F1.4 is something of an anomaly in the company's current lens lineup, as the last of their film-era primes featuring plastic construction and an aperture ring. This actually reflects the fact that Pentax are probably the leading proponents of modern-design fixed-focal length lenses, with their range of compact 'pancake' lenses and 'Limited' series high quality primes being the envy of users of other systems. Indeed we can probably presume that the 50mm F1.4 will itself be superseded by the recently-announced Pentax-DA* 55mm F1.4 SDM lens, but in the meantime it stands as the most obvious option for users seeking a fast prime for low light and portrait work.

Head to Head: Nikon D60 vs. Pentax K2000 at DigitalCameraReview

Looking for a head to head comparison of two great DSLR cameras? David Rasnake at DigitalCameraReview has put the Nikon D60 and the Pentax K2000 to the test to find out that most DSLRs are "basically without exception, all quite good".

From the review:

What makes up the perfect consumer-grade DSLR? Ask ten potential buyers and you're likely to get ten different answers. But there is one thing that a majority of first-time DSLR buyers seem to hope for in these cameras: reduced size and weight. If you're coming up from most point-and-shoot models, your average entry-level DSLR seems downright huge by comparison, and market research conducted by various manufacturers in the last few years suggests that concerns about size and weight are one of the primary reasons cited for choosing not to upgrade to an interchangeable lens camera.
But DSLRs don't have to be so intimidating. Over the weekend, we wrapped up our review of the compact 10.2 megapixel Pentax K2000. We were so impressed with this very manageable DSLR's credentials as a travel camera, in fact, that it only seemed natural to do a little investigating, Head to Head style, as to how this camera stacks up against one of our favorite compact DSLRs of all time – the similarly speced Nikon D60.

Check out the full review here.

If you want to buy one of these, you can head to my Amazon store to buy the Nikon D60 or the Pentax K2000.
