Popular Photography travels in time, tests Nikon D3X

The review from the not so distant future in March 2009 (see image), has a thorough look at the new Nikon D3X camera, the 24.5 Megapixel beast targeted at professionals, photojournalists and adventurers. The massive camera is loaded with top-notch features, with ISO ranging from 50 to 3200, 14 bit per color RAW images, full-frame sensor and other goodies. Make sure you get a decent lens to get out the best from this body.

Nikon Raises D3X Price 10% Due to Currency Fluctuations

If you thought the new Nikon D3x was expensive, thank your lucky, lucky stars you're not British (unless, of course, you are British, in which case you should head straight to the pub and get a pint -- watch out for those CCTVs on the way).

Nikon has jacked the price of its new high-end DSLR to £6000 ($8800) in the UK due to the slinky-like fluctuations of currency exchange rates. The original UK list price, announced back in December, was a mere £5500 ($8050). That's almost a 10% rise in one month.

Do you need more than twenty million pixels? Canon thinks so, and you can pick up the 21 million pixel EOS 5D Mark II for a shade over £2200 on the high street.

Sony thinks so too, and it's 24 megapixel flagship, the Alpha 900 can be found for around £1700.

Nikon is the latest DSLR manufacturer to jump on the ultra high-resolution bandwagon, and it's new 24-megapixel D3x is on sale at a photographic store near you for £5500.

Professional gear comes at a premium, and it always has. The Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III from Canon, for example, offers the same resolution of the EOS 5D, but in a tougher professional quality body, with top-notch AF and metering. Its list price is very similar to that of the D3x.

Note: With the current conversion rate, the price tag of the Nikon D3x would show $8,387.42. Yes, 8 and a half thousand dollars. (1 GBP = 1.52499 USD as of today)
