Micro Four Thirds, Olympus PEN and Panasonic GF1 - an overview

Rik Fairlie had an article posted at NYTimes about the Micro Four Thirds standard, the Olympus E-P1, E-P2, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 and the other options currently available, here's what he has to say:

“The ‘R’ in D.S.L.R. refers to the reflex of the mirror,” said Sally Smith Clemens, a product manager for Olympus. “Without a mirror box, it’s not a D.S.L.R.”
The want of a mirror means that Micro Four Thirds cameras are more compact and lighter than D.S.L.R.’s, yet they produce better photographs than point-and-shoots because they have a larger image sensor. As a rule of thumb, larger sensors deliver better photos because they have greater light-gathering capabilities. But that generalization is not absolute, because factors like the camera’s image processor and lens quality also come into play.

Canon Touch-Screen DSLR coming?

The image actually appears in US Patent Application No. 12/422,695, which was originally filed by Canon on April 13, 2009 and published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office on October 22, 2009.

So, what can we learn from the patent?

Well, the patent is only 13 pages long (that’s a bit short for most of Canon’s patents that I’ve read) and does not cover claims that are specific to the overall touchscreen interface. Instead, the patent primarily covers claims relating to accidentally touching parts of the touchscreen when bringing the camera to your eye in order to look through the viewfinder.
Specifically, the camera is supposed to allow users to register their dominant eye. The photographer will input whether it is the left or right eye. Then the camera will detect the registered eye when it is brought to the viewfinder. At that point, the camera will disable a portion of the touchscreen that would likely be touched by your face and, therefore, prevent any setting changes. Also, note that the patent covers the possibility that the camera may automatically detect which eye is brought to the viewfinder and disable the appropriate portion of the LCD.

Pentax K-x vs Sony Alpha 550 reviewed

Tom's Guide has a new review form Digital Versus, comparing the Pentax K-x and Sony Alpha 550, also noting differences between the Pentax K-m and K-x.

A year after Pentax released its highly rated K-m, there is a new entry-level DSLR with the K-x. The two cameras are very similar, with the exception of one major change. The old 10 Megapixel CCD sensor is out, and a new 12 Megapixel CMOS sensor is in. So what we expect is a comfortable, pleasant-to-use little SLR with improved sensitivity.

Among DSLRs, the K-x is up there with the best of the moment. Start-up is instantaneous, focusing is fast (but noisy with the kit 18-55 mm DA L lens), and so is image saving... provided you don’t enable the optical correction functions, which cause a delay of approximately three seconds when saving files! But since the same corrections exist in photo-retouching software, it may be better to leave them up to the computer. Burst mode is fairly fast, at 4.5 frames per second for nine JPEG images – an excellent result for an entry-level camera.

Mac users own more DSLRs?

Taken from Macworld/PC World article Report: U.S. Mac Households Rise to 12 Percent:

72 percent of those Mac users have laptops, and are very likely to live in mixed environments--a staggering 85 percent of those Mac users surveyed also own a Windows-based PC. And 66 percent of those households contain three or more computers, compared with 29 percent for Windows households.

Those in Mac households are also greater consumers of consumer electronics. The survey found that 63 percent of Apple households own an iPod, compared to 36 percent of overall computer owners. 32 percent own a DSLR camera (versus 12 percent), while 18 percent own a 50-plus-inch LCD TV (versus 8 percent).

And we also get the reason why:

"Thirty-six percent of Apple computer owners reported household incomes greater than $100,000, compared to 21 percent of all consumers. With a higher household income, though, it's not a surprise that those consumers are making more electronics purchases."

Yeah, interesting.

The 12.2 megapixel camera isn’t cheap – the list price is $2,200 – but it should do most of what the M9 does. First, that lens. You can’t change it, and it doesn’t zoom, but as most Leica-M users stick to a 35mm lens anyway, the Elmarit 24mm f/2.8 Ashperical should do the trick. The math nerds will have noticed that 35 divided by 24 is 1.46. This betrays the X1’s huge sensor. It is bigger than the micro four thirds sensors, and essentially puts a DSLR-sized (APS-C) chip into a compact camera.

ISO runs from 100 to 3200, shutter speeds up to 1/2000th of a second, and there are 11 focus points plus face-detection. There is also a pop-up flash and a 2.7-inch, 230,000 dot LCD screen.

In addition to the usual auto-modes, the X1 has manual aperture and shutter-speed dials on the top plate, and that when you buy it, it comes with a license for Adobe’s Lightroom software, a very welcome addition as bundled software is usually awful.

The one thing missing is an optical viewfinder, but following the trend set by the Olympus EP-1, you can buy one to slot into the hot-shoe mount up top. It’ll cost you, of course (another $350), but if these optional finders become popular then a third-party market might grow to sell them, just like in the olden days of ‘finder-less “rangefinders”.

The camera features an ISO range of 160 to 2,500, 2.5-inch LCD screen and is still compatible with Leica M8 and M8.2 accessories. The LEICA M9 is available in two different styles: a standard black with ‘vulkanit’ finish, and for the first time, a version in steel-grey with classic leatherette finish.

M9 Sensor
The CCD, specially developed by Kodak for the LEICA M9, has been optimised to exploit the particular qualities of the Leica M lens system. As a result, the LEICA M9 achieves the highest resolution values, which in turn guarantee outstanding image quality.
The M9 sensor employs further advanced and meticulously-designed micro lenses with a low refractive index. The micro lenses at the sensor edges are laterally displaced towards the image centre to match the characteristics of M lenses precisely. This optimised micro lens design captures and concentrates even the most oblique rays on the sensor, and reliably prevents image brightness fall-off at the edges and corners of the image. As a result, all existing Leica M lenses maintain their full performance when used for digital photography.
A moiré filter has not been integrated, allowing full exploitation of the superb resolution of Leica M lenses. Any moiré patterns occurring are eliminated in the camera’s signal processing software. The optimised signal–noise ratio reduces the need for digital post-processing, and results in high-contrast, high-resolution exposures with natural colour rendition from corner to corner.

Lenses
Performance criteria, such as the individual coating of each element, have long been a Leica standard. For the first time, the immense performance potential of the M lenses is fully maintained and can be exploited for digital photography. In line with Leica’s commitment to system compatibility, almost all Leica M lenses built since 1954 can still be used on the new M9, as a result of their mechanical and optical precision.
The M9 sensor demands a particularly high spatial resolution, as offered by the latest M lenses. Their high resolution and efficient correction of optical aberrations make them all the more suitable for digital use. Current M lenses are supplied with a 6-bit code on the bayonet mount that is scanned optically by the M9. Using this coding, the M9 can compensate for any vignetting effects, if required. In addition, the lens type is recorded in the EXIF data and, when using the latest flash units such as the LEICA SF 58, automatically adjusts the reflector to match the focal length of the lens attached.

The viewfinder / rangefinder system
The Leica viewfinder / rangefinder system sets the LEICA M9 apart from SLR and compact digital cameras and makes it particularly suitable for reportage, ‘available light’ and discreet portraiture. Photographers become part of the action and frame their subject in the viewfinder, while still being able to see the full scene outside the viewfinder frame. The decisive moment can be anticipated and captured at precisely the right instant, resulting in particularly authentic images.
The clear view of the subject remains during the full exposure and, even in the most adverse lighting conditions, the bright, high-contrast viewfinder guarantees extremely fast and precise focusing. The minimal delay between shutter release and capturing the shot, together with the viewfinder / rangefinder system, positions Leica M cameras amongst the fastest in the world.

Shutter
The LEICA M9 features a new, microprocessor-controlled, particularly silent, metal-leaf, focal-plane shutter that enables shutter speeds of up to 1/4000 seconds. This means that the photographer still has complete creative freedom by using selective focus at maximum apertures, even in bright situations. The short flash synchronisation speed of 1/180 seconds enables daylight flash exposures with selective focus.
Together with its compact form, the camera’s almost silent shutter is another enormous advantage for discreet and unobtrusive photography. Photographers can also select the appropriate moment for re-cocking the shutter. When longer exposure times requiring an extremely steady camera stance are essential, a slight pressure on the shutter release button in ‘soft release’ mode is sufficient.

Intuitive handling
The M9 offers a simple, clearly laid-out and intuitive menu system that concentrates purely on the essentials; eliminating any multifunction buttons or complex menu hierarchies. The key control is an intuitive four-way switch and dial combination that enables fast menu navigation. Pressing the set button calls up the capture menu on the 2.5" monitor, and the most commonly-used functions are quickly and easily set in the menu: sensor sensitivity, exposure correction, white balance, image-data compression and resolution. Furthermore, favourite profiles can be named and saved for quick and easy access.
Sensitivity ranges from ISO 80 for wide-open apertures on bright days to ISO 2500. Very low-noise and finely detailed images are achieved throughout the sensitivity range, even at the highest settings, while the low noise characteristics, low-vibration shutter and fast lenses make the M9 the perfect camera for ‘available light’ photography.

Innovative flash technology
The LEICA M9’s M-TTL flash technology enables both precise and creative control over flash and mixed lighting effects. Prior to the actual exposure, a measuring flash is emitted that is metered through the lens. The flash power is then precisely determined according to the natural lighting situation. Due to the precise and delicate level of flash illumination, the natural lighting mood is maintained. In combination with aperture priority exposure mode, the auto-slow sync function ensures a particularly subtle lighting of the subject.

Tonal value histogram
The LEICA M9 offers an RGB tonal value histogram, which can be displayed at any time for image assessment, and is available in conjunction with automatic image review. A clipping warning indicating any overexposure of the image is also included. These two quality control tools are updated during zooming, allowing the quality of even the finest image details to be assessed.

Digital workflow
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, a professional digital workflow solution for Apple Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows, is available as an online download for all LEICA M9 customers. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom offers a vast range of functions for the management, processing and presentation of digital images, whether in JPEG or DNG format. If the images are saved as raw data in Adobe Digital Negative Format (DNG), Adobe Photoshop Lightroom guarantees direct and high-quality image processing with maximum image quality. The 14-bit-per-channel colour information captured by the image sensor is maintained throughout the processing workflow until the final presentation, and ensures that the most delicate tonal differences are preserved.

Build quality and materials
Experienced Leica technicians in Germany are responsible for the assembly and calibration of the M9 camera bodies, as well as the precise testing of all mechanical and electrical components. In addition to the solid brass top and base plate and magnesium alloy body, several other structural features of the camera will ensure a long and reliable working life. The rechargeable battery and SD card slot are protected from dust and moisture under the base plate, while the locking mechanism prevents unintentional opening and the possible loss of the battery and SD card, even under the hardest reportage conditions.

Sensor cleaning

Sony aims to improve low-light photography

At the high end, the DSLR-A850, $2,000 (body only), is a full-frame camera aimed at experienced shooters, those who may also be considering more expensive models like the Canon EOS 5D Mark II and the Nikon D700. A full-frame D.S.L.R. has an image sensor that is roughly the same size as a frame of 35mm film, while most entry- and mid-level D.S.L.R.s use sensors that are considerably smaller. The larger sensor enables you to record more pixels with less noise, which translates to better low-light photography.

The A850’s CMOS sensor has a resolution of a whopping 24.6 megapixels and is capable of continuous shooting at the highest resolution at three frames a second. It has a high-resolution (921,000 pixels) 3-inch LCD for reviewing images and framing shots using Live View.

The A850 will hit store shelves in September. Sony also announced a new 28mm to 75mm (equivalent) F2.8 lens for the A850 that will be $800 when it is available in November.

Canon 7D mid-range DSLR, new lenses announced

The Canon 7D will be available at the end of September for $1,699, or packaged as a kit with an EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM zoom lens for $1,899.

The EOS 7D features 18-megapixel resolution, shoots at up to eight frames per second and can record 24p full HD video. It touts a 19-point autofocus system and a new metering system that Canon calls iFCL (intelligent Focus, Color and Luminance). It supports UDMA CF cards, with which it can capture eight FPS continuously (up to the size of the card). ISO speed settings supported range from 100-6400 (expandable to 12,800).
Video shot with the camera is at 1920 x 1080 resolution and can be set at 24p, 25p or 30p frame rates. You can shoot in 16:9 or 4:3 aspect ratios, using either the integrated mono mic or an external stereo mic to pick up audio.
The camera uses an APS-C-sized CMOS sensor and is compatible with more than 60 Canon EF and EF-S lenses. Other features include a new built-in “Dual Axis Electronic Level” which produces an artificial horizon over the image on the rear LCD screen in Live View or in the viewfinder using illuminated AF points to help level your shot. The pop-up flash sports a built-in Integrated Speedlite Transmitter, to control multiple EOS Speedlites without having to use an external transmitter — helpful for studio and wedding photographers working with multiple flash setups, for example.

At approximately 5 by 3.8 by 2.5 inches, the D3000 it has roughly the same compact measurements as the D40, although Nikon has added softly rounded curves to the chassis. It weighs a relatively light 17 ounces.

Nikon has added some new in-camera retouch features that should appeal to inexperienced users, including a miniature effect, soft filter and color outline, which creates a black-and-white “sketch” that’s Crayola-ready for the kids.

Nikon has included the capability to create stop-motion videos, although the camera cannot capture video. Nor does it have a Live View option, which is typical of entry-level D.S.L.R. models.

The D300s has many of the same specs as its predecessor — identical resolution and image sensor, 51 autofocus points and Live View — but it adds the ability to capture video in AVI format at a resolution of 1280 by 720 pixels at 24 frames per second. The D300s is a bit faster than the D300, with a 7 frame-per-second continuous-shooting capability (versus 6 frames per second on the D300). Nikon says that the D300a has 15 cross-type AF sensors that deliver better focus accuracy and tracking capabilities.

It has the same moisture-sealed magnesium alloy chassis body as the D300 but adds dual Compact Flash and SD/SDHC card slots.

Canon Unveils Hybrid IS Image Stabilization

Canon says that sudden changes in camera angle can introduce significant blurring in images taken in standard shooting while shift-based shaking is more pronounced in macro photography when the camera moves in parallel to the subject.

The Hybrid IS system uses an angular velocity sensor that has been found in previous Canon IS lenses and incorporates a new acceleration sensor to compensate for shift-based camera shake. The system also has a new algorithm that synthesizes the information from the two sensors to make adjustments.

Canon reports that it is actively engaged in ongoing research and development on D-SLR camera lenses that support Hybrid IS technology and is looking to commercialize the new feature in a wide range of products. The first D-SLR lenses using Hybrid IS are planned before the end of 2009.

Olympus E-30 Digital SLR Camera

The Olympus E-30 has a well-rounded feature set that should appeal both to consumers upgrading from lower-end DSLR cameras and to buyers looking for something of a more semipro caliber. The E-30 is sold as a kit ($1350 as of 7/7/09, including a 14mm-to-54mm lens) and as the body only ($950 as of 7/7/09).

Compared with its older sibling, the Olympus E3, the E-30 has a smaller body and a lighter weight. On this model Olympus has sacrificed the weatherproof, magnesium-alloy body in favor of a plastic and fiberglass version, which may be a deal-breaker for photographers inclined toward outdoor shooting. The E-30 features a handy swiveling LCD so that you can capture shots from odd angles, or even simply rotate it and snap it inward to protect it while you're out and about.

The E-30 boosts the image sensor to 12.3 megapixels, from 10 megapixels in the E3. It also adds Art Filters, effects such as pinhole, soft focus, pop art, and grainy tone. Though you can preview these effects in Live View, you can't modify them in-camera. As for more-concrete functionality, the E-30 adds improved contrast detection focus, in-body stabilization for vertical panning, and improved electronic AF adjustments for older and third-party lenses.

Two New Entry-level Nikon DSLRs

After the announcement of the swivel-screen hobbyist DSLR Nikon D5000, the entry level photography enthusiasts must be looking for something slimmer and easier to use. Just then, images of Nikon D3000 and D300s were leaked out on the web stating that they are the upcoming DSLR cameras from Nikon.

Lenstip guys believe that Nikon D3000 would be a scaled down version of Nikon D5000. The scaled down means that there won't be the D5000 exclusive swivel-LCD screen in D3000 DSLR. Also, the HDMI and built-in microphone will not exist in D3000.

Along with that, NikonRumors carried images of upcoming Nikon D300s body meant for entry-level DSLR enthusiasts. This new D300s, assumed to be without microphone, is a close match to existing Nikon D300 model. It's being speculated that D300s would be capable of recording 720p HD video content, have a quiet shutter mode, would be able to shoot continuously at eight frames per second and have an SD storage support.

There's no official announcement from Nikon on these cameras. Also, no information about the approximate pricing is available as of now.

Olympus E-620 reviewed by DPReview

Olympus has established a tradition of offering very well specified cameras at the entry-level, and was one of the first to offer two cameras in this bracket - the little E-410 and its image-stabilized big brother, the E-510 (later upgraded to the 420 and 520 respectively). Now it has introduced the E-620, a model that will 'sell alongside' the E-420 and E-520 (in the sense that we suspect it will eventually replace the E-520) as the company's attempt at a '500D-killer'.

And, even by Olympus's standards of entry-level generosity, it's not short on toys - including an articulated screen to make full use of its live view system, which itself is one of the better implementations of this feature (from the company that got there first). It's also got 'Art' modes and the ability to shoot in four different aspect ratios - adapted from the features of the more expensive E-30. There's also in-body Image Stabilization and a level of configurability that is unparalleled in this class. In fact it's astonishing how much Olympus has crammed into its small dimensions - it's nearer to the size of the E-4X0 than the E-5X0 series (due in part to use of the small BLS-1 battery), and the E-420 was famously the smallest DSLR in the world.

Of course, since the E-620 was announced, Olympus has launched the E-P1 mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, which shares many features with the E-620 and is still smaller. However, the through-the-lens optical viewfinder and fast, phase-detection autofocus system mean that the E-620 shouldn't face too much of a threat from its more compact sibling (despite the degree of shared componentry, they're different cameras that fulfil rather different needs).

Kodak Announces End of Kodachrome

Kodak has announced the withdrawal of Kodachrome after 74 years on the market. The film type was made famous by top photographers as well as the singing duo Simon and Garfunkel in their song of the same name.
Kodak announced it was pulling the film because it now only made up less than one percent of the company’s sales. The company’s website featured interviews with world famous photographers who used the classic film.

A 35 mm Kodachrome slide has the equivalent of about 20 megapixels of data, and this resolution is only found in modern Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) high-end cameras, like the Canon 5D or the Nikon D3X which have about 21 or 24 megapixels respectively. However, most affordable digital cameras today do not have the level of clarity of Kodachrome.

Like: The camera continues the Pentax style of no-nonsense SLRs. There are no gimmicky concessions to customers moving up from compact cameras. Every function is a genuine photographic tool. The Pentax kit lens is particularly fine. Image quality is exceptionally good, with one caveat.

Dislike: The camera has one serious flaw. JPEG images straight from the camera are unimpressive both in sharpness and in colour. We are at a loss to understand this because the RAW images are excellent. JPEG and RAW can be recorded simultaneously, so in one sense it is not an issue but it does mean that to get the best from the K-m you must be prepared to work with RAW files. If you use a Mac and iPhoto this will not be a nuisance but PC users will have to come to terms with RAW.

Canon 1D Mark IV DSLR Camera specs rumors surface

Specs include a 1.3x crop sensor for 16-megapixel images, sRAW1 format for 8-megapixel images and an ISo sensitivity of 50 to 26,500. The supposed beta tester reveals that the camera has a burst shooting mode that’s faster than the 1D Mark III and has a super fast autofocus as well.

Other features include a 3-inch LCD screen, video recording, and ergonomically arranged buttons and controls. We already heard about an August release date for this model, so if these specs are real and there are beta models in tester’s hands, that date is looking more and more likely.

iPhone DSLR Camera Remote for Nikon

A new version of the onOne will get an update to version 1.1, which includes a set of bug fixes, a new user interface and support for Nikon DSLR cameras.

Mike Wong's post on the official onOne blog says:

[...] we are still working on our 1.1 update to the DSLR Camera Remote app for the iPhone and iPod Touch. And yes, the number one feature request we are adding is support for Nikon DSLR Cameras.

One other thing we are adding is a better user interface. Here’s what you can expect to see when 1.1 comes out (estimated release date is mid-July).

I think the new user interface is much nicer than the original 1.0 version and should be much easier to read. Additionally, all of the controls that you can change are grouped together while the buttons that are more informational in nature (like the focus mode and exposure mode) are placed lower and out of the way.

The fire button gets a face lift as well and looks more like a real shutter release button on your camera.

The options menu, which previously was essentially hidden under the Fire button (which you had to press and hold to access - not the most intuitive I’ll admin) gets it’s own button on the lower left corner as well (it’s that gear icon).

Readers unfamiliar with the Micro Four Thirds format may want to take a look at our earlier coverage of its announcement. It is ironic for Sony to comment that video-recording feature will be a necessity for dSLRs, because its recently launched Alpha DSLR-A230, A330 and A380 entry-level models don't sport this function.

The trio will face fierce competition from Canon's EOS 500D and Nikon's D5000 which offer a minimum of HD-quality movie recording. Also, the pricing of the A380 in the US (US$850) is almost similar to the Canon dSLR. So why should consumers pick the Alpha over the 500D?

Nikon D300S Specs and Screenshots Leaked

The D300 is Nikon’s top-level DX camera, meaning that, unless you opt for full frame, you won’t get a better camera. The D300 debuted alongside the flagship D3 back in 2007, and as the D3 has spawned the D3x, we’re not surprised to learn that there will be an upgraded D300.
Video will probably be the weird Motion JPEG found in the D90 and D5000. Here’s the relevant section:

Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX11-16mm f2.8 zoom lens reviewed

The only areas where the Tokina gives up on features is that the Auto-Focus isn't driven by an internal motor but relies on the focus motor in the camera body. This limits its use on some Nikon bodies that don't have an internal AF motor, like the D40. Even though the Tokina doesn't have a Silent Wave or Ultrasonic focusing motor inside I have to say that its still a fast focuser. Sometimes faster focusing in low light is better than a slower aperture lens with an internal focus motor. Final point is that some of those lenses go a little wider, down to 10mm (but 1mm isn't much of a difference) and some go a much longer, up to 24mm.

Buying a dSLR is more like buying a computer than a TV or an MP3 player; you're not shopping for the cheapest model you can find, you're looking for the cheapest one that can do what you need. That's why it's critical to know exactly what you expect to be shooting before you narrow down your choices. If you want to shoot your kid playing sports, saving a couple hundred dollars by opting for a too-slow model will just leave you with a "budget" doorstop. On the other hand, video support is new enough that it adds cost to the camera that you may not feel is absolutely worth it.

Olympus E-P1 Micro Four Thirds leaked

Based on the leaked Olympus E-P1 photo, the camera will be released with a 17mm, f2.8 prime lens. It will have the Art Filters introduced with the E-30 and now available on the E-620 as well, and also the Intelligent Auto mode.

Olympus’ E-P1 Micro Four Thirds camera has shown up in the wild, complete with a a 17mm f2.8 prime lens. Details regarding the camera are scant - in fact these images are pretty much all we have to go on - but it’s suggested that Olympus will release the E-P1 in July this year.

Leonard Goh at Cnet Asia has a short comparison and some interesting notes around the Micro Four Thirds and Four Thirds lenses.

He also says "there are actually more variations between these three classes of cameras." Oh rly?

If you're tired of letting your point-and-shoot control your shots and want to upgrade to a more advanced camera, there are plenty of choices out there. You may have come across dSLRs such as the Canon EOS 500D and Nikon D5000. Then there are shooters like the Olympus E-620 which uses the Four Thirds System. Last but not least, there is the Micro Four Thirds System found on the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH1.

Nikon offers DSLR training

Pocket-lint went down to the "Introduction to Digital SLR Photography" course to check out what the standard of training was like, and whether or not the residents of Kingston minded being photographed as they went about their everyday lives.

First things first, you probably ought to own a Nikon camera. While the trainers don't seem to frown on bringing other companies' equipment along - one gentleman brought a Lumix at our session - everything is taught in reference to the features and menus of Nikon cameras. If you've got one, you'll have a much easier time of things.

Canon’s EOS 500D – or Rebel T1i as it’s known in North America – is the company’s latest entry-to-mid-level DSLR and the successor to the hugely popular EOS 450D / Rebel XSi. Announced towards the end of March 2009, the 500D / T1i externally resembles its predecessor with exactly the same dimensions and similar weight, but inherits a number of features from the higher-end EOS 50D and EOS 5D Mark II models; it also becomes the company’s second DSLR to feature HD video recording.
The EOS 500D / Rebel T1i features a jump from the 12.2 Megapixels of its predecessor to the same 15.1 Megapixels as the semi-pro EOS 50D. Canon describes the sensor as being almost the same as the 50D's, and indeed it also shares the same 100-12800 ISO sensitivity range and 14-bit processing.

onOne Software is putting the finishing touches on a new iPhone application that acts as a remote cable release for Canon DSLR cameras.

So the new software doesn’t just remotely snap the camera shutter; it also supports setting controls like aperture, shutter speed and white balance. Plus, it taps into the Live View mode of many Canon models, so you can remotely view the scene right on your iPhone. The software works over Wi-Fi and requires that your Camera be USB-tethered to a Mac or PC. The computer will run a small server application to make the connection between your handset and your DSLR. The above pic shows a great use for the remote shutter snap — Mike Wong does his best Air Jordan impression while Dan Harlacher snaps the image remotely. This vid shows the setup for that shoot, using the DSLR Remote software. Interesting that they used an Acer Aspire One netbook for the PC component here, although that makes sense because it’s light and relatively inexpensive.

onOne expects to set a $19.95 selling price, but there should be an intro deal at half that cost. I’m sure to take a peek at this when it hits, although the T1i isn’t yet listed as a supported camera. Maybe I should hold on to that XSi for a few weeks yet?

Nikon awardded for best-selling DSLR in Malaysia

Nikon Malaysia Sdn Bhd has been presented with the GfK No. 1 Award for the best-selling Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera category in Malaysia.

This signifies that Nikon is the best-selling brand of DSLRs in the country. The award was based on unit sales for the period January to December 2008.

Stephen Ng, general manager of Nikon Malaysia, said DSLR cameras are becoming more affordable and more consumers are realising the potential of digital photography.

“Over the past two years, the market trend in Malaysia has made a prominent shift toward DSLRs (primarily because of those factors),” he said.

Ng said Nikon Malaysia is striving to maintain its pole position by continuing to field innovative products, maintaining brand reputation and staying competitive with its pricing.

In this vein, it has just launched its feature-packed D5000 DSLR into the Malaysian market. One highlight of the new camera is that it has a swivelling LCD panel which makes it easier for photographers to overcome hard-to-shoot angles.

Nikon’s D5000 can also shoot video — quite a feature when you consider that DSLRs have a bigger image sensor that that found on traditional handycams.

Canon announces manual exposure video control for EOS 5D Mark II

Canon announced a firmware upgrade that will add full manual exposure control for video — including ISO, aperture, and shutter speed — to the Canon EOS 5D Mark II. The mid-range professional dSLR has been lauded for its excellent HD video capture capabilities (1920×1080,16:9 at 30 fps) since its release last September, but after everyone got over the initial excitement of getting near-professional-quality HD video from a dSLR, folks immediately started complaining about the lack of manual controls in video mode. The newsletter, in the form of a mock movie poster, indicates that there has been popular demand for manual controls, and that the new update will leave “no need to compromise with inferior workarounds.”

A press release from Canon Europe, provided a few more details, listing a June 2 date for download from Canon Europe’s support web site and stating that the manual controls when shooting video would include full aperture selection, ISO speeds from 100 to 6400 and H1, and shutter speed ranging from 1/30th to 1/4000th of a second.

Canon did not announce plans to add similar functionality to its other video-shooting SLR, the EOS Rebel T1i, but entry-level consumer users of the T1i may be less inclined to use manual controls for video.

The copper brown version of the A330 has a metallic dark copper shade on the top, brown shaded plastic on the textured front, and a black back. Its grip surfaces are brown, and the metallic surfaces — including those of the kit lens body — are a copper/brown color. According to Imaging Resource (in their brilliant hands-on A330 review), “Sony spoke with many focus groups, and this color combination was chosen overwhelmingly among the colors offered. One of the reasons given was that black lenses looked pretty good with the copper brown body, so people were most pleased with the color.” The copper brown version, model number DSLR-A330L/T, carries the same $849 price tag, is sold in the one-lens kit only, and will be available in Fall 2009. Pentax K-7 High-End DSLR

The 14.6-megapixel Pentax K-7 boasts a 23.4-by-15.6mm CMOS sensor, which the company says offers new video capabilities and four-channel output, as well as better low-light performance. The K-7 has an ISO range of 100 to 6400.

The K-7 also offers an 11-point autofocus system, a revamped metering system that features 77 light-metering points, a built-in flash, and the new Prime II image processor. Shutter speeds range from 1/8000 second to 30 seconds.

The high-end DSLR also features the same user interface as the lower-end K2000 DSLR, as well as body-based image stabilization. That sensor-shifting system means that the K-7's shake reduction feature will work with any Pentax K-mount lens, not just more-expensive stabilized lenses. A supersonic dust-removing vibration system is also part of the K-7's feature set.

The K-7's 3-inch-diagonal LCD features live view, the ability to use the larger display as a viewfinder in addition to the camera's traditional optical viewfinder. Pentax is also touting the K-7's viewfinder as having a field of view of 100 percent and heralds the K-7 as a highly weather-resistant camera, thanks to an entirely weather-sealed and weather-proofed body.

With the addition of full HD video, a greatly-expanded ISO range and a fantastically high-res LCD screen, the new Canon EOS 500D / Digital Rebel T1i has graduated to the ranks of mid-range, prosumer DSLR. Add an increased price-tag of $799.99 / £869.99, and this can no longer be considered an entry-level model, with a feature set and cost that in many ways equals and even surpasses the higher-in-the-range EOS 50D model. The 500D's handling certainly isn't as good, with a body that's still a little too small for average to large-sized hands, but for many people the inclusion of full HD video will more than compensate for that.

Sony Alpha 230, 330 and 380 dSLR details

CNet Crave blog writer Rich Trenholm has some fresh info on the new line of Sony DSLR cameras, namely the 230, 330 and the 380.

The A230 is a lightweight, entry-level model. The top-end A380 and middle child A330 boast flip-out screens. All three boast HDMI output to TVs, but do not appear to shoot video of any definition. Features shown include a new user interface, showing aperture and shutter speed on a sliding scale, pictured left.

The leaked pages mention APS-C format sensors, presumably for all three cameras. The sensors are protected by a dual dust-reduction system. Sony's Bionz sensor handles the thinking, while a dynamic range opimizer handles tricky, contrasty images to keep detail in both highlights and shadows.

Another feature is a smart teleconverter, which magnifies the image by 1.4x or 2x on the camera's screen, for more precise focusing. We also like the look of a 40-segment metering system, pictured right.

Finally, Sony has gone all green, pointing out that the cameras' shells are made using polycarbonate byproducts of CD-ROM manufacturing. Very reassuring. It also appears that one--or all--of the cameras supports two types of memory card. We've got our fingers crossed for SD cards, but we'll settle for CompactFlash, like the Alpha A300, alongside those pesky Sony Memory Sticks.

Lighting is something that a professional photographer always considers. “50 Lighting Setups For Portrait Photographers”, published in December 2008, is written by freelance photographer Steven Begleiter.

With twenty five years of professional photographic experience, this book aims to share many of Begleiter's past portraiture assignments and the manner in which he decided on his lighting.

I have to say that this is an unconventional photographic book, taking a feel that is more suited to a recipe book.

Indeed Begleiter uses a simile in his introduction that: 'photographic lighting, like cooking, has “recipes.” And this is indeed that.

Canon EOS 5D mkII reviewed

The 5D2 is an awesome camera, the pictures it produces are quite simply superb, the level of detail is really quite incredible. The quality of the video is also superb.

The Camera is a good size and well made, it’s also easy to operate, but read the manual as there things that will catch you out. If you are upgrading from an older DSLR you’ll find a lot of new features and improvements on the old ones. It’ll also be faster, the battery lasts longer and it takes better pictures ...but you might need a new computer! You might also need a new lens, EF-S lenses will not fit the 5D2.

The 5D2 is probably very good for video but this really depends on if you can handle the lack of manual control and put up with the hacks to get around this limitation if you need it. For most people it probably isn’t an issue, for more serious film makers this is a very big deal.

The 5D2 is a very expensive camera but you certainly get what you pay for. I’d recommend it to anyone who is serious about their photography.

Panasonic GH1 price revealed

Cnet's Crave senior editor Lori Grunin has a short post about the high price of the new Panasonic GH1, which is available for preorder for $1500 at J&R. Yes, that's 1.5 grand for the Micro Four Thirds camera with a kit lens.

Given that J&R doesn't generally offer the deepest discounts and that the camera isn't really shipping yet so competitive pricing hasn't kicked in, I expect the street price to be closer to $1,299--still pretty pricey, even with the bundled 14-140mm (28-280mm equivalent) lens.

Then again, it's a new technology and probably a new market segment, so who knows what price the market will bear. The question is, would you pay that much, assuming the photo quality and performance can match a similarly priced dSLR?

Sony Alpha A330 rumored

Sony UK support site revealed a few details of what seems to be an upcoming model from Sony's Alpha DSLR line.

Protoclub Alpha says on their news page Alpha 330 - future model?

Since two new lenses - presumed to incorporate focus motors because of their design - are also shown on the support website, 50mm f/1.8 and 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6, it can be assumed the camera will be sold with these lenses as no existing models have the codes Y or L when used in kits. There is a possibility that these budget lenses are not SSM, but use a cheaper internal micromotor. It may also be fair to assume to the body could lack mechanical focus drive support.

They also speculate that there may be a few other models coming out this year:

This may mean nothing (just a poorly written site layout) or it may mean the higher end models will be A730 and A930 (since 30 seems to be the increment chosen). It’s worth checking this site, and others, in the coming days as changes like this usually precede launches. Sony traditionally launches cameras either before the summer holiday season for its various worldwide markets, or at the start of the ‘return to work’. Past launches have been early June (with pre-release information in May to dealers and some press under NDA) and September (with the same in late August).

After close examination of the 12.3-megapixel D90, it is plain to see that Nikon have cleverly created what is essentially a blend of the most well-received and comprehensible technologies, features, and interface design from their large array of consumer and professional DSLRs, to produce an exceptional prosumer model with a ‘world first’ gong to its name.

One of the D90’s most notable selling features, aside from its outstanding image quality, is undoubtedly its world first ability as a DSLR to produce high definition movie files resulting in what Nikon describe as ‘genuinely cinematic’ movie clips.

Three frame sizes are available for recording in D-Movie mode: 1280x720 (16:9) for highest quality widescreen movies suitable for plasma and LCD TV viewing, the default 640x424 (3:2) for standard viewing, and 320x216 (3:2) for reduced movie file size.

Olympus E30 Art Modes and Filters, review

Tan Kit Hoong at The Star Online posted an article, half-review, half-something-else, reviewing the Olympus E30 while focusing mostly on art modes and filters, vignetting, retro stylish shots and more.

Funky filters and modes give an interesting twist to the Olympus E-30 DSLR.

THERE was a time when DSLRs were meant for professional and serious amateur use, while compact cameras were meant for parties and casual users.

The main difference was that DSLRs generally were a bit more difficult to use and lacked compact digicam features like Live View and video recording.

These days, of course, the lines are definitely blurring, with DSLRs and compact cameras getting ever closer in terms of features and pricing.

Most DSLRs come with Live View (and some with video recording) and prices for entry level models are very close to what you’d pay for a high-end compact digicam.

The Olympus E-30 blurs these lines even further.

Though hardly the first digital camera to shoot HD video (notable examples include the Canon 5D Mark II and the Nikon D90) the GH1 manages to provide jaw-droppingly-good HD video (1080p) in a smaller and less-expensive package* than its predecessors and rivals. This means that any idiot with a thousand bucks, a subject, and a PC can become a movie producer.

Revenue From DSLR sales Dropped 43.6% between January and February

DSLR manufacturers rushing to put out new models as camera market takes a beating

The digital single-lens reflex camera's market is getting tough. There are signs that the once-thriving market for digital single-lens reflex cameras (DSLRs) may be slowing down, according to newest market research data.

While pricing for DSLRs is less aggressive than that of compact digital cameras, manufacturers are still striving to boost sales, in hopes of additional sales of lenses and accessories.

However, according to the Camera and Imaging Products Association, revenue from DSLR sales has dropped 43.6 percent between January and February.

Also, according to market research firm BCN, while unit sales for March are up 29.3 percent, successive price drops mean that revenue has only gone up by 5.9 percent.

While BCN says there are various factors causing the disparity, it explained: "Between November and February, while sales did increase, these were for cheaper products, such as older models, causing the phenomenon of negative growth for the same month the previous year. Sales in the DSLR market are not progressing as well as they did before."

Manufacturers are now rushing to add new features to their cameras in order to pump up sales further. Panasonic's Lumix DMC-GH1K, a beginner-oriented camera with the ability to shoot high-definition video, goes on sale this month, with a similar offering from Nikon next month.

Canon has said that in the current economic environment, it doesn't expect a major surge in sales but recognizes underlying demand for the cameras and hopes to attract customers with new products.

Pentax K20D Firmware Update v1.03 Released

Pentax has released a firmware update for its K20D digital SLR camera. The new version, 1.03, improves operation of the Shake Reduction (SR) function of the camera.

Pentax's in-body image stabilization technology, SR includes a built-in sensor in the camera body that identifies hand movement and compensates by moving a free-floating image sensor. This technology allows photographers to take photos at considerably slower shutter speeds, and improves the quality of photos taken in dusk or low-light situations.

Leica S5 Concept Design

Stefan Radev has a post on Yanko Design where he conceptualized the Leica S5, his version of a followup to the S2 announced last year. He explains that the design for the shooter is to emit harmony and at the same time show the technological advances of the new S system.

While it looks pretty much like any other dSLR, Radev's specifications for this camera is every gearhead's dream. He envisioned a 50-megapixel sensor, 3-inch 950k-dot LCD and onboard image stabilizer. Within the shooter are also a GPS receiver for geotagging and wireless LAN for transmitting images to computers. To keep up with the trend of top-notch dSLRs, the designer also added an HD video-recording feature into the S5.

Built on a smaller frame, like the D60, the Nikon D5000 takes up the top position in Nikon's consumer SLR camera space, and joins a small set of competing digital SLRs that offer HD movie recording: the Nikon D90, Canon 5D Mark II, and Canon T1i; and though not strictly an SLR, the Panasonic GH1 will also be considered by many looking for an interchangeable lens digital camera.

L firmware? L like language database? No, we have that already. Lens database? Yes, it is a lens database introduced for the first time with the Nikon D90 DSLR according to David Busch (he is the author of several photography books). Canon Rebel T1i preview

The major new feature of the EOS 500D / Rebel T1i, and undoubtedly the one which will gather the most attention, is its HD video recording capability – indeed it’s only the second Canon DSLR to offer the facility after the high-end the EOS 5D Mark II. Unlike any model in the existing Canon EOS or compact range, the EOS 500D / T1i offers a choice of HD video recording quality from 1080p or 720p, the latter allowing longer recording times. This is a considerate and very welcome feature, although frustratingly the 1080p mode only records at 20fps compared to 30fps for the 720p option. Canon explained to us this was due to the limitations of the two-channel readout of the sensor. Perhaps it would have been better to avoid a compromised 1080p mode altogether and the negative comments it has received though, and just concentrate on what will almost certainly be a great-looking 720p mode.

Nikkor AF-S DX 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR reviewed

The DX 16-85mm VR is clearly a well-featured general-purpose lens, but the Nikkor range is not short of alternatives for DX-format bodies. Beyond the existing DX 18-70mm, the standard D80 and D90 kits came with good quality 18-135mm and 18-105mm lenses, while the DX 18-200mm VR remains one of the best super-zoom options around; even the DX 18-55mm kit lenses deliver respectable quality. None may boast the 24mm equivalent coverage of the DX 16-85mm VR, but the question is whether there’s sufficiently compelling reasons for owners of DX-format Nikon bodies to switch to this model instead?
